What is the difference between Web2 and Web3 Gaming?

Hello Seedify Community,

As we are nearing closer to a busy period of Seedify IGOs we thought we should look into some of the differences between traditional and blockchain gaming. There seems to be a disconnect between experienced Web2 gamers and the exciting new possibilities that Web3 gaming offers. Is it that they are unaware, don’t understand or maybe don’t care about blockchain gaming?

To fully understand the main differences between traditional and blockchain gaming, let’s first look at the differences between Web2 and Web3 so we can understand how this can be applied to gaming.

Web2 vs Web3:

The internet has come a long way since the “read-only” version, born in the late eighties. Web2, or the internet as we now know it, allows us to read, write, create and communicate with anyone worldwide. Whilst Web2 has provided the tools for user-generated content (UGC), it still relies on centralised sites and servers. Centralised servers such as AWS, host large amounts of website data, including everything that happens on the internet, which has proven to be extremely valuable. Companies such as Facebook and Google use the power of your data for their own personal gain. As the saying goes, “If you are not paying for the product, then you are the product” — This is where Web3 comes in.

Web3 will remove control by decentralising the internet, so centralised servers will no longer be needed. Web3 centres around ownership and transparency, and due to blockchain acting as a distributed ledger (or decentralised database where anyone can add to the ledger), users can conduct transactions securely and share assets with each other without needing a third party. These features make things like DeFi, NFTs and blockchain gaming possible.

Why Web2 Gamers Should Be Excited About Web3:

  • Decentralised — Games can be hosted entirely on-chain, meaning no centralised body can switch off or delete the game history. Everything that happens in games is visible for all to see.
  • Earn Crypto — Players can trade in-game assets, win tournaments and earn crypto from other exciting rewards mechanisms.
  • Ownership — Players actually own all of their in-game assets, wearables, mounts etc. These can all be traded in games or on secondary marketplaces bringing real-world value to players’ achievements.
  • Governance — Blockchain games can offer DAO governance and allow players to vote on the game’s future, how it should invest its profits and more.
  • Increased Security — By removing the single centralised point of weakness, players can trust their personal data, and information is much more secure. This, coupled with the security of Web3 wallets, means players can buy and sell safely.
  • Create Transferable Characters — Blockchain allows players to have one character that can be transferred across multiple games and metaverses.
  • Support Games in Early Stages (through IGOs) — Gaming launchpads like Seedify offer players the opportunity to support games at a very early stage by purchasing tokens. This is not only great for the game and the industry but can be potentially very lucrative for the players as well.

What’s Next For Web3 Gaming?

Even with the huge Play-to-Earn boom and hype surrounding the metaverse, we are still waiting for a real blockchain gaming bull run. However, the focus has already shifted from Play-to-Earn to Play-and-Earn, emphasising fun and enjoyable games with sustainable in-game rewards.

We have also recently seen some impressive investments in blockchain gaming, with projects like Ready Games receiving a $3M investment to incentivise Web2 game programmers to explore and switch to Web3.

Now, with more investments and experienced game developers starting to take an interest in blockchain gaming, it can be only a matter of time before we start to see Web3 games comparable to Web2.
